Following an introduction, there will be 3 sessions working with the pattern of the school day
before break – between break and lunch – after lunch until end of school day.
Session 1 – The Archaeologists
Storytelling: Finding of the tomb of Tutankhamun. Howard Carter is credited with finding the tomb but did he actually find it?
Role play: as archaeologists arriving in Egypt, searching for and finding a hidden tomb.
Society: Using images from tombs, explore Ancient Egyptians’ roles and how they fitted into the ‘Pyramid of Society’.

Session 2 – Learning from objects- 5 activities as a carousel
Piecing together the evidence: Work together to repair a broken pot.
Rosetta Stone and Hieroglyphs: Learn about this hugely important Ancient Egyptian artefact and practise hieroglyphic writing on real papyrus.
Object handling: Use objects to learn about the gods, everyday life, what was buried in tombs.
The Underworld game: Play a simple counter and dice game to tread the perilous path of the Egyptian Underworld and be the first to reach Osiris.
Sketching: Practise speed sketching as you might do if working as an archaeologist ‘in the field’.
Session 3 – Mummification
Explore: Ancient Egyptian beliefs about the Afterlife and why preserving and looking after the body of loved ones was so important.
Role-Play: Within a mummification workshop to prepare a body for the Afterlife. Everyone will have their specific job to do.
Perform: The role-play to invited parents and school friends at the end of the school day.
Standard Cost for the full day experience: £275

Teacher Testimonials
Neil was fantastic when visiting our school. He provided a comprehensive and engaging array of activities for our children. He was able to adapt his information to where the children were at with their knowledge in their learning sequence and finished the day with a brilliant performance to parents of which we received lots of positive feedback. We will definitely be having Neil back next year and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a topic-based day to enrich the children’s learning.
Louise Fitzpatrick, Ottery St Mary Primary School
We just had a FANTASTIC in-school workshop regarding Ancient Egypt from Neil Heasman at The Time Travellers. Fun, reasonable price and excellent for those cohorts that are tricky to travel with!
Jessica Powell, Lady Seawards Primary School
We had Neil visit our school as part of our Ancient Egypt topic and would wholeheartedly recommend him!
From our first communication via email, he was helpful and clearly knowledgeable. We discussed at what point in the children’s learning would be most appropriate for him to visit, and settled on a date close to the end of the unit.
On the day, the children were kept excited and engaged throughout. Neil came dressed as an early archaeologist, which really helped the children to immerse themselves! The activities were varied, including handling artefacts and roleplay, as well as the use of storytelling via tablet which I thought was a great idea for larger classes.
Throughout the day, his depth of knowledge really stood out At the end of the day, the children prepared and performed a mummification showcase to the rest of the school which had parents from the other classes asking about the day as their children had gone home discussing it.
I am a strong advocate for ‘hands-on’ history so someone like Neil visiting schools and delivering these activities is a brilliant way to enhance a school’s history curriculum – thank you Neil!
